How fit do you need to be to train Muay Thai?

Beginners are welcome. Here is an honest look at the intensity and how to build a base first.

You do not need to be fit to start. Camps that run beginner classes will meet you where you are and scale the work. That said, camp days are physical, and a base of fitness makes the first week far more enjoyable.

What the days ask of you

Two sessions a day is common, and the heat adds to it. Your legs and shins take the most early load. If you have only trained lightly, plan to ease in, take the rest day, and hydrate well.

Build a base before you go

  • Two or three cardio sessions a week to lift your base fitness
  • Basic strength work for legs, core, and shoulders
  • A few striking sessions so the movements are not brand new

If you want a running start, a US coach can cover the basics and your conditioning at home. Learn stance and strikes near home, then arrive ready to train, not to start from zero.

Questions

Common questions

Can total beginners train in Thailand?
Yes. Many camps run beginner classes that start with fundamentals. Tell the trainers it is your first time and they will scale the session.
Should I prep before I fly?
It helps. A few weeks of cardio and basic striking makes the first camp week easier. A local coach can guide that prep.
