Thailand's hot spots

The places worth a day trip or a detour between training blocks, from islands and temples to markets and national parks.

In short

If you are training in the south, build rest days around islands and beaches. In the north, lean into temples, markets, and mountains. Bangkok is the hub for culture and stadium fights. Here are the highlights by type.

Islands and beaches

The southern coast is the reason many people pick Phuket or Krabi. Day trips reach the Phi Phi islands, the limestone bays around Krabi and Railay, and quieter beaches like Nai Harn and Kata. Book boat trips through a reputable operator and check the sea conditions.

Temples and culture

Bangkok's Grand Palace and Wat Pho, Chiang Mai's Old City temples and Doi Suthep, and the ruins of Ayutthaya are the big cultural stops. Dress modestly at temples, with shoulders and knees covered, and remove your shoes where asked.

Nature and national parks

Beyond the beaches, Thailand has waterfalls, jungle, and national parks. The hills around Chiang Mai, Khao Sok in the south, and the coast at Khao Lak are easy to reach. If you visit an elephant park, choose an ethical sanctuary that does not offer riding.

Markets and nightlife

Night markets are a highlight in their own right, especially Chiang Mai's weekend walking streets and the markets across Bangkok. They are a cheap dinner, a bit of shopping, and a slow evening after a hard training day.

Questions

Common questions

What is the top day trip in the south?
An island boat trip, such as the Phi Phi islands from Phuket or Krabi, or the bays around Railay. Keep it low effort so your legs recover for the next session.
What should I not miss in Chiang Mai?
The Old City temples, Doi Suthep for the view, and the Sunday walking market. All are close to the camps and easy on a rest day.
